That's very true. China, ever since the major reforms of Deng Xiao Ping in the early 1980s, has been trending further towards liberty than many in the Western world give them credit for. Of course, there is the occasional effort by the government to squash dissidents and torture their monks, etc. but no country is perfect.

The irony is that as we lose sight of true liberty and its many benefits, China is slowly but surely allowing a controlled infusion of liberty into its society. It has a long way to go, but is perfectly happy with the patient and methodical way it uses economic and individual liberty for its long term benefit. Instead of the Russian method that takes a people indoctrinated by socialism and privatizes everything overnight, China wants to control the transition. As the U.S. works to be the world's police and trade liberty for safety nets, China will pass us all by -- all by embracing the lessons we taught them.
