Having a blog with the name Boys Wear Pants, Men Wear Trousers, you could just imagine some of the sick shit that people type into google and end up getting my site instead. But the past few days, I’ve been getting a steady stream of traffic from folks googling my name and not in a good way. In Tulsa, Oklahoma last week; a two year old boy named Joshua Minton died after his day care provider bound his hands with masking tape and then covered his mouth. He was found by police who had come to arrest the dumb bitch on an unrelated child abuse charge.
The picture of the little boy could have been me at two years old, toe-headed and smiling. I’m sure he was a handful, full of energy and onery as all get out–just like me. Just like my son is now. God knows he tests my patience daily and I’ve been known to raise my voice and lose my temper periodically but there is a solid interlocuter there that would never allow violence against a child. Some people don’t have that breaker and when pushed by children, an evil and iron will comes out and destroys smiling bouncing happiness. In Josh’s case, it destroyed him completely.
What really pisses me off about the whole thing is that the day care provider was under surveillance by the police but Josh’s parents apparently were never told about it and look what happened. It could have just as easily been me. I was a day care kid, my mother worked a full time job and had to send me to a United Way funded child care center in Decatur, Illinois which has long since shut down but of which I actually have fond memories. That place and the adults and children I was exposed to did much to shape my early adolescence and likely factors into the man I am today.
And even though I was probably a pain in the ass every day I went there, none of the adults harmed me in any way. Poor little Joshua Minton wasn’t given that same fair shake in life, though and I deeply feel sorry for him and his family. I will probably think of him often when making major life choices–he wasn’t given this chance but if he had been, what would he have done?
Rest in peace, little man.
