Sleeping through a Sunday morning Ohio thunderstorm
Dog snoring at the bedside
My son’s face at the bedside, laughing
gap between his front teeth, saying
“today’s a stay home together night.
It’s light out so you have to get up with me.”
Then the sound of a little boy peeing in the next room
forgetting to flush.
My wife telling him to go back and finish.
Ten minutes later, both kids playing
newspaper soggy from the storm and strewn
all over the living room floor wet bites
from my daughter’s toothless gums.

These chaotic moments of safety, unsuppported
by order are what make life worth living.
