Want to go to Harvard for free?

The Ivy League is taking a big risk with their new financial package for middle and lower class families but they are gambling on some solid principles of social bootstrap pulling.

  • Families that earn $120,000 to $150,000 annually would have their costs reduced 50%, instead paying 10% of their annual salary towards the child’s tuition (this 10% goes down on a sliding scale relative to actual family annual income)
  • Families making less than $60,000 would get free tuition

Of course, this all assumes the kid has the chops to make it into Harvard academically but the opportunity this is going to present for gifted middle class and poor children is the exact shot in the arm the collegiate system needs.

Look, we all know that major universities are whores who care less about teaching than they do about fundraising and academic-inspired branding and advertising. And don’t let people fool you, degrees do matter in the business world but equally up until you start talking about the Ivy Leagues.

This actually gives me hope for my son as a lot of schools will likely follow Harvard’s lead here. This is the exact reason he has homework with rewards at age four (and why he’s already reading, counting, and writing his name at four also). I plan on continuing to inspire his learning by focusing on his passions and connecting them to education and perhaps someday he will be the first Harvard Man to rise in the Minton clan.
