Joshua Minton’s Online Pulpit : This is Bullshit of the Highest Order!

The Cincinnati Enquirer published an article today announcing to the world that Representative Jean Schmidt (who beat out media darling Paul Hackett for the Cincinnnati Congressional seat so publicized in the liberal blogosphere) has procured a license to carry a concealed firearm. The article describes how her and her “stockbroker husband” (another inciteful term to the Media Elite) took a 12-hour hangun course and “Watch out Cincinnati, U.S. Rep. Jean Schmidt may be armed.”

At the bottom of the article, they just happen to mention how Paul Hackett already had a conceal-to-carry license.

Excuse me, but what business is it of the media or anyone else who chooses to exercise their Second Amendment rights, whether that individual is a public servant or not?

Stupid ass media!

Well at one hand I can see it, because it is a public record and, therefore, the public has a right to see it, based on the Freedom of Information Act. But at the same hand I can definitely see where it is an infringement on personal privacy. But, you should also know this coming into the permitting process and be willing to deal with that. I mean, we can publish a list of sex offenders and that could really fuck up someone’s life. Couldn’t that be an invasion of privacy brought about by the media? 9.5 times out of 10 the douche in that case deserves it but my point is that the statue does not state that the list must be, or even can be, kept confidential, therefore it is subject to FOIA. Now the ethics of publishing such a list or record is a totally different matter. It just tells you that most members of the media, and definitely the author and editor of that release, are soulless pricks.

Agreed. I guess it all comes down to protecting the public. I just don’t understand how publishing a list of people who own handguns protects the public. It is common sense that criminals purchase handguns through the black market and don’t register for courses or licenses. All these ridiculous hoops that law-abiding citizens are made to jump through in order to secure their security is somehow passed off as in the interest of public safety is beyond me.

Well it does come down to protecting the public. And I’m not sure that all of it is a series of hoops. It seems that way but that is a result of the beast we’ve created: bureaucracy. You have to have a system of laws in place to create a structured society. You then need to promulgate regulations to enforce those laws. This is the way that it manifested itself, but you know that. Let’s not also forget that in the law making process there are concessions to me made. You lose a battle to win the war. An average citizen can now carry a concealed handgun with no reason aside from his desire. But I agree, how this being public information protects the general public is unknown to me. Maybe you should put it out to your readers for discussion…
