Look, I really do feel bad about what Kathy Sierra is going through but I think this reactionary call for a Blogging Code of Conduct would be like Jimi Hendrix limiting what he played to the first five frets of his stratocaster fingerboard.

I’m all for ignoring the douche bags out there who treat other people with no respect and to some extent, I’m all about holding blog owners culpable for the limits of blatant disrespect they allow in their comments section. But free speech is free speech is free speech and having “A-Lister” bloggers put a meaningless self-regulation on we of the long tail makes about as much sense as telling a fly how many times its allowed to land on your head before you shoo it away.

It’s important to rally around and protect people from this type of verbal attack but it should be enough to call them out and simply not pay attention to them any longer. In the end, shunning a verbal idiot is still the most powerful weapon the sensible among us have to combat complete ignorance.

Besides, the people who make threats are not the ones you have to worry about–it’s the motherfuckers that come from nowhere and strike without cause that are the dangerous among us–just ask Elie Wiesel.
