I am very stoked about Love in the Time of Cholera finally being made into a movie. This is one of my favorite novels of all times–unrequited, love that defies logic, defines two peoples destiny and lasts a lifetime. The love triangle in the book blasts apart all social convention. Gabriel Garcia Marquez is one of the greatest authors in the history of the world. It’s one thing to be a great writer in your own language but something completely different to be a great writer in translation from your native language. I can think of two writers in particular who fit this category–Marquez being one and the other being Nikos Kazantzakis (author of The Last Temptation of Christ, one of the most beautiful and spiritual books ever written).
I just finished watching the making of special on HBO for this movie and it looks like the movie will be every bit as powerful as the book. I love it when a well-written book translates to a great movie. Not only do you now have the visual art to enjoy but it provides a fantastic supplement to the language. Language and image are two slam dunk home runs when they work together, like chocolate in your peanut butter, baby.
