Plugged Nickel, Columbus, OH! by Nat Zipsky 2.0I remember when I first started blogging. Everybody who was somebody was like, “You have to blog every day, several times a day if you want to make it in this business.”

And I was dumb enough to believe that it was a business, that it was anything but a public pensive, at best a tool for sharpening prose and grandstanding on the minor musings of what always seems like major issues to us.

But as time runs on, I believe the secret to a good blog (meaning one I’d read again and again) is good content. Good content doesn’t come from posting every day. Don’t believe me? Go read the bloggers who post every day, several times a day. 60% of what they write is shit and it’s difficult to sift out the 40% when you’re on overload. Often those blog feeds end up in the trash bin of my aggregator.

I tried to do it every day, honestly I did. And often I found myself digging or simply repeating or linking to what other people were saying. About a year ago, I said fug it and decided I’d only post when I felt the need to write. That’s why I urged my readers to sign up to my RSS feed and those of other bloggers and keep track of us through aggregators. That post every day shit was intended to keep people coming back on a regular basis but with an aggregator whenever I decide to write something it goes out to every one of my feed readers.

In the end, I’d rather work on writing the 40% good shit and leave the 60% crap in the toilet of my mind and I hope as a reader you appreciate that decision.
