I was extremely lucky and privileged to have been invited to attend a behind the scenes tour of the OSU football program hosted by none other than Coach Jim Tressel. How I got the opportunity isn’t important; the fact that I showed up with bells on is what’s important.

I saw the player’s lounge, the weight room (amazing), the locker room, the coaches office (Tressel has the greatest office I’ve ever seen in my life), the hallway of history which I swore not to tell anyone about on this blog, the meeting room where Coach holds court every day, got to each lunch in the Huntington club, and got to play around on the field.

It is a solemn experience to stand in the middle of the O in the horseshoe. This was only one of the many times I stood in awe that day. There is such a rich history of Columbus in the culture of Ohio State football that to leave my footprints on that field was something very close to praying.

My favorite part of the day was the talk that Coach Tressel gave to us where he told us about the “Block O” philosophy of education where you get the mind and spirits focused on the purposes of life–Family, Spirit, and Giving before they focus on their goals in life–Fitness/Strength, Football/Family, Academics/Career. I was extremely moved by the Coach’s message, that we are each put here on this planet to help each other and to achieve excellence in our relationships with one another.

My friends, that is a philosophy that goes beyond football, beyond the Midwest, beyond America and reaches to the greatest goals and highest aspirations of our species.
